So the police had to escort 2 Obama supporters to safety when a crowd riled by McCain threatened them. They were at a McCain “Joe the Plumber” rally holding their signs and chanting “Obama!”…the crowd surrounded them and yelled things like terrorist, socialist, and communist…now I’m pretty sure that we can establish that Barack Obama is in fact a politician and is only a terrorist so far as any United States politician is and likely less of one than the majority of them. Supporting Obama for President is most cerainly not a terrorist act, and suggesting that it is so reflects a deep sickness in the people thinking thusly. Certainly citizens of the United states should be nothing if not believers in democracy and democratic processes. The nature of democracy requires candidates of varying view points and just because one of these candidates or their supporters don’t share a person’s view this certainly doesn’t justify the offense that they are taking at this. McCain’s message and his supporters are certainly trying to instill terror in as many people as they can, and what is terrorism if not the attempt to coerce through instilling terror. Let us just leave the terror thing alone except when it comes to fighting backpack bombers and the like, ok? Socialism is bad? I guess during the cold war such systems often got lumped in with communism, and those two only share some characterisitics. Even if they did share more than just some of teir ideals the fact of the matter is that both communism and socialism are potentially healthy practices and in fact are practiced in various forms about the world and when you spit “socialism” and “communism” with ridicule you are somehow villifying all the people who beleive that it is a good thing the world over and this makes your look like an ingnorant redneck from the US and it makes the whole US look like ignorant rednecks. Just because we prefer democracy here doesn’t mean socialism or communism is evil or that socialists or communists are bad people. But the fact of the matter remains that socialism is quite different from democracy in many ways and spreading the tax breaks around does not constitute socialism. The wealth Obama spoke of “spreading around” is wealth that is already paid to taxes, he was saying that we need to make sure the taxes are fair and that rich people and big business actually have to pay taxes. The loop holes in the tax system currently allow these people the write off so much that they don’t even pay taxes. No people making 1.4 million a year don’t need the tax breaks the bush administration gave them the middle class needs that tax break back. The fact that people seem encited to such hostility that they would choose slanderous intimidations is a testament to the fact that our democracy is disintegrating. As the middle class diminishes our sovereignity is entering into its final stages of decay, if we cannot agree to a peaceful democratic process and make every attempt to restore the middle class into existence we are on our way to tyranny. As a nation it must be decided that we can live with and support whatever outcome our chosen democratic process produces. I know I am extremely scared of what will happen if McCain wins but still I must just do everything I can to ensure the process is fair and the people are allowed to choose whom they feel is appropriate. I am even scared to the point of desperate thoughts so I do understand the hostility on the other side for I have had hostile thoughts but at such times I think to myself that I must school my thoughts back to the support of the democratic process for otherwise why would I even vote. If I didn’t believe in the outcome of the democratic process why let myself be led but a government that claims to be such. Our votes are not only votes for a candidate but votes for the viability of the system. Each person who votes is saying that they are a willing participant in the process and accept its outcome as valid and legitimate and as their choice on how things should be. If anyone has legitimate reason to question the the validity of the democratic process it is the democrats whom have lost the last two presidential elections in the electoral college but not the popular vote. If I were a republican I would be worried about the morale of the democrats and most likely would try to throw the election so that the democrats could win one and think they were still a legitimate part of the game. I would be worried that it looks like the republicans are fixing the elections and a democratic win would assure voters that such is not true and maybe it takes a second to wrap ones head around the implications here but McCain is just one guy so what if he is too old to have a chance to run again he should still throw the race in the interest of a cohesive nation, a nation in which republicans can once again run for office. You see the decay of democracy goes down a very predictable path. First the people vote themselves into tyranny out of ignorance as they eliminate the middle class and nothing remains but upper and lower class out of which a wannabe tyrant rises from the upper class and rules foolishly and frivulously while the people, the majority any how, which also now happens to be lower class, look on with rising contempt, later that true tyrant arrives on the tide of the people(the lower class revolts and chooses a leader) this leader is a true tyrant as he will rule all with an iron fist to save the humans from themselves and their baser ways as a whole. You see democracy is not the final evolution of governance. Democracies and Republics have been around longer than Jesus. We have known and recorded the cyclical pattern of these governmental systems before the new testament. Never before has a nation moved so rapidly through the evolution as the United States, never before has so vast a population been at the mercy of the innevitable outcomes inherent therein. Look, democracy will die, I have never voted before because I have had significant trouble believing in the viability of democracy but this time I want to give it a chance I feel true hope but I can assure you I will be back on the protest if any of that funny monkey business of the last two presidential races takes place. I protest only peacefully and as long as everyone else keeps it that way, so will I.
